I was asked to design a contemporary-style drinks cabinet. The contemporary design style was chosen to suit the modern interior, whilst contrasting the 18th Century Victorian outside architecture of my Paddington terrace house. This would make the cabinet the standout piece within the Kitchen/Lounge area as it would contrast the dark timbers and stoned tabletops whilst aligning with the modern and Scandinavian furniture. My cabinet features a mirrored backing which would also create the allusion of space within my design whilst also aligning with the 2 glass shelves in my design. My contemporary drinks cabinet was designed to house a number of bottles along with cocktail-making equipment, which could be situated on the bottom level with the glass shelves being designed to house wine, champagne and drinks glasses. However, these glass shelves are also able to be removed for storing taller vases or bottles. My drinks cabinet will be situated next to the seating/living area of the kitchen as it will be easily accessible and out of the way of the kitchen. I used Tasmanian Oak as it is a durable, workable and native timber which looks great with a variety of finishes. I also utilised polished brass handles, dowels (for the glass shelves) and hinges to further align with the contemporary design style whilst creating small pieces which would make the design stand out further.
