John Desborough, Compartment Box (Bowls & Boxes)
A multi-compartment box with secret drawers and latches. The box is 300mm wide by 210mm deep by 300mm high to the top of the finial. It is made from 6mm plywood veneered with a mix of silver birch and red cedar. The vertical sliding panel at the right-hand end, when removed, reveals a spring loaded-drawer, held in place by a simple lath and dowel latch. Extensive use is made of decorative inlayed strips at the front and on the lid. The lid is made of a selection of red cedar over 4mm plywood. The box contains14 various sized compartments, some obvious and some concealed. The ends and back are veneered in the book leaf fashion using burl veneer. The whole is finished with two coats of bees wax polish.
