I made this shelf as part of the Nine Month Comprehensive Course at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship this past year for the curvature segment. Originally designed as a vehicle to learn as many techniques as possible, this piece really took on a life of its own as it came into focus. So happy with how it turned out! I love the lightness of the piece with the 3/8" x 5/8" vertical slats and how it rises out of the ground. The vertical slats are solid air-dried ash, steam bent to give the sweeping curve at the bottom of the piece. They're joined to the shelves with half-laps cut into both pieces. It was fun to cut those on the shelves! The shelves are made from two components, the flat shelf surface, which is baltic birch with 1/16” ash veneer, and the rim, which is made as two halves out of bent laminated ash. The base is ash veneer over a brick-laid poplar core, with dados cut in a radial pattern to accept the vertical slats. Learned so much (steam bending, bent lamination, brick laying, veneering, weird weird joinery on curved components) making this piece. At times it seemed impossible and I swore I would never make this piece again, but I'm excited to dive back in and learn even more making it a second time. A big thanks to Tim Rousseau @timothyrousseau and Owain Harris @o.h.harris on this one! my instagram: @massifgoods
