Patrick Connell, Coffee Table in Quartersawn American Oak and Huon Pine (Furniture)

This American oak coffee table, with Huon pine drawer fronts, ironbark splines and maple veneer drawer bases, was an opportunity to design the ultimate practical and workable coffee table with an expression of multiple woodworking techniques. The coffee table has rounded mitred dovetail sides at the top, along with rounded mitred sides with ironbark splines on the bottom sides. The drawers are also mitred with ironbark splines. The base has dowel pinned tenon and mortised legs. The drawer fronts incorporate a scalloped finish. There are three soft close drawers in total, with an additional magazine/newspaper cavity space. The piece is a merging of my inspirations from Scandinavian furniture design to American Arts and Crafts furniture. There is a focus on solid timbers, the piece is strong yet elegant and practical (curved dovetails not merely for look but to meet the brief of producing a piece which is safe for young childen).
