This desk is an exercise in sustainability. It is constructed entirely of recycled timber that was left over in my work shop from other jobs. The client wanted to make sure no new timber was used in the build. It is always challenging working with a variety of timbers to maintain a consistent visual story that doesn't look like patchwork but with careful timber selection I think a good balance was achieved. The client required a full sized filing drawer as well as a smaller drawer and I chose to split these units into two boxes to reduce the visual weight of the drawers and add interest to the piece overall. The black striped timber is Blackbutt taken from an industrial chicken shed (often called chock wood). The ammonia from the chicken poop leaches down through the cracks in the timber to stain it jet black. The desk frame is redgum, drawer cases are spotted gum, and the drawer boxes are tas oak with a cedar base.
