Isaac Ferguson, Carl Fredrickson (ART, OBJECTS 2021)
Stereotypically, whittling is an old man’s hobby, in this case, whittling an old man is my hobby. Inspired from the Pixar movie ‘Up’ cantankerous cartoon character Carl was carefully carved. He is equal parts obtuse and endearing. The first three minutes of the movie depict the relationship between Mr. Fredrickson and his beloved wife Ellie and would have a tear welling in the eye of even the most unromantic cynic. The moral of the story is ‘There’s always another adventure’ and in my woodworking journey, this rings true. Cabinetry, furniture making, woodturning and now flat plane carving is my most recent adventure in woodworking. Standing at a hunched over 130mm and supported by a 3D printed quad walker modelled and printed by my nephew Josh. The front and side views were roughed out on the bandsaw then carved with predominately a knife (30mm blade) and a “V” gouge. The glasses frames were two rosewood veneers glued together perpendicularly to strengthen short-grained sections. The grape soda cap aka the Ellie Badge was carved separately using a tiny veiner tool for the crimped edges. Material- Jelutong.
