Carbon negative chair by design. Traditional techniques & materials have been used to create a quality chair, that has proven service history & can be repaired to ensure a long service life for the end user, while also sequestering Carbon. My interpretation of a captains chair is constructed with tapered, wedged mortise & tenon joints glued using traditional hype glue, the upper section of the backrest is steam bent. The chair is handmade from locally sourced New Zealand Farm forestry timber direct from the point of origin, some species over 140 years old. My style is inspired by the American Studio Craft movement, along with a passion for craftmanship to help the timber tell is story. This chair is a mixed species design to show how visually different timber can be, but also show how traditionally each of these timbers were used in chair making. Black Walnut has been steam bent, finger jointed & laminated to form the arm bow. White oak has been used for the spindles, Wych elm has been used for the seat pan, with white ash for the chair legs & stretchers. The chair is finished in Osmo PolyX-Oil.
