Ned Collins, C5 bench (STUDENT 2021)
This piece was an attempt to explore the functions of cabinets through a modern lens, how in a modern world cabinets and the act of containing objects has changed and adapted, our material relationships are so different in this world of modern technologies. I wanted to make something that was interactive, a space or place that nodded to the idea of tradition. A piece constructed using very traditional techniques, that in itself contradicts the traditional notions of function. The piece is completely modular and movable, the Bench is constructed with Dovetailed Slats, and the matching cabinet, and hanging drawer are mounted using complimentary dovetail wedges. The box and drawer can be slid, or moved in any configuration along the bench, or removed entirely. The drawer box is open topped, letting a view of the drawers contents be seen through the slatted bench. Made from American Walnut, Rock Maple, Western Red Cedar, and Wenge
