Reece Woodards, Butchers Block (Student Awards 2019)
Hi my name is Reece Woodards and I am a year 12 student of St Peters Catholic College (2019), my major works project is a unique take on a traditional butcher’s block bench and has been specifically made to be a functional and durable project by staying true to the traditional purpose of the butcher’s block. In addition to this, I have incorporated modern preferences and ergonomics into the design process. The dimension of the project is 963 x 588 x 900mm and has been created out of blackbutt, merbau and Tasmanian oak hardwood as well as pine (softwood) timber. The main theme of my project was to achieve a contrasting colour theme. This was achieved through making an 120mm thick endgrain checkers pattern out of merbau and blackbutt timber and painting the frame black to contrast the naturally light Tasmanian oak shelving and draw fronts. My project was produced from 4th of February to the 15th of August 2019 and includes a variety of joinery such as mortise and tenon joinery (rails), rebate, mitre and a stopped housing joint. I have finished this project with a grapeseed oil ( end grain bench ), black water-based paint and a semi-gloss varnish. Year 12, St Peters Catholic College. Teacher: Owen Preston
