Peter Parkes, Built in Shelving. Vic Ash, Messmate (CHESTS, CABINETS, SHELVING 2021)
Built-in bookshelf. Dimensions: 3.9 metres length 2.3 metres height. Victorian Ash and Messmate. The main structure was constructed from rescued Victorian Ash (Eucalyptus regnans, Eucalyptus delegatensis) otherwise destined for landfill. This timber was milled, prepared and joined to construct the shelves, frame and backing. The shelves were dressed in Messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua) sourced from CERES timber, grown in Taggerty, Victoria. The dressing is the crowning jewel on the shelf, because of the historical family significance of the dressing timber to the client. These hardwood timbers complement the original flooring throughout the house, which is also Victorian Ash. The bookshelf, lit from both feature lighting from above and a nearby north facing window, allow the rich and varied hues of this Australian hardwood to shine. Running through each panel are varying shades of blonde, strawberry, cream, gold and brown. Rescued timber, dressed to the client's delight, functional, blending into the timber environment, yet proudly glowing and individual.
