Box 89 340 x 263 x 130 Box body Sassafras, lid from Birds Eye Huon Pine veneer with Huon Pine and Walnut trim. Merino wool felt bottoms linings. Years of accumulated offcuts, a small workshop, limited storage and an aversion to working large, heavy pieces has led me to concentrate on boxes. This has been a rewarding choice as I love the creativity of designing and the challenge of making small pieces which get viewed from every angle with nowhere to hide faults or awkward details. My designs are always my own with simple and modern lines, letting the wood speak for itself, either in subtle blends or strong contrasts. I am particularly fond of dowelled hinges, utilizing timber cut from the same boards as the box and serving as a point of difference with many other makers. I like the hinges to be a feature, unlike those who like to make them as invisible as possible. A proprietary Veritas dowel maker and a shop made drilling guide for the hinge pins are employed. We are fortunate in Australia to have a huge diversity of timber species to utilize in more combinations than I will ever be able to exhaust.
