David Hall, Box 102 (CHESTS, CABINETS & BOXES 2023)

Myself

Box 102 continues my practice of employing the timber dowel hinges that have become something of a signature for my work. These hinges are to me attractive, practical and economic. In this design I have set the box into a cradle to provide both visual and physical lift. Designed for use as either a jewellery box or for any other small objects, there are 5 removable trays, accessed by removal of the first for access to the others. A small clip and magnets hold the lower trays in place for sideways opening. The overall dimensions are 355 x 260 x 145. The box body is Huon Pine, the lid has uses fiddleback Blackwood veneer with Silver Ash and Ebony highlights. The support cradle is Ebony. An Andrew Crawford lock is fitted. The finish is shellac and microcrystalline wax.
