Books and Secrets is a playful response to a client brief for a highly original, 'hero' piece of furniture, a centre piece to an amazing home, overlooking Bar Beach, Newcastle. The shelving unit/bookcase is also a room divider, providing privacy from the lounge to a bedroom beyond. Books and Secrets has a integrated hidden door, alluding to a tradition of 'secret bookcases', the romantic concept of hidden locations and concealed wisdom. Through a contemporary, sophisticated composition I have designed this piece to further the theme with the form pointing to a 'maze' or 'Chinese puzzle' . No handles or clues to the entrance are apparent and the door is opened by pulling a shelf. The shelving unit is fabricated from hand cut American White Oak veneers, laid up on 6mm ply, to form torsion boxes, with carcass's in ebonised White American Oak- all finished in satin and matte oil. The concealed door swings on a hand-crafted brass and stainless steel hinge mechanism and is held with an electronic lock.
