Sleek was the goal! The design idea for these lights started with how to make the light blade as minimal and fine as possible, almost to the point of appearing improbably thin for the light it was producing, and was achieved through the use of tapers, tapers, and more tapers. The basic shape of the blade was then extended down to the base with the neck providing a point of articulation. The electronics were placed in the light blade and base by careful routing, and in the stand by joining a split piece with a channel down the centre. This project was a family affair. My father-in-law, an accomplished metal worker, milled the metal dowels and bands to design; brass being the perfect choice to complement the rich colour of the New Guinea Rosewood. Many different materials were trialled for the diffuser but eventually a laser cut clear PCV was hand sanded to opaqueness and proved the idiom that the simplest options are sometimes the best.
