Alby Johnston, Black Forest Bench Seat (Art & Accessories)
The Black Forest Bench Seat was created in response to the wildlife and habitat loss during this year's bushfires in Australia. The aim for this piece is to remind people of our reliance on the forests and its inhabitants, while highlighting humanities important role in maintaining the health of our forests for the future of our wildlife. The title and inspiration for this work references the Black Forest Furniture from Germany, which frequently featured carved bears in the designs. By using the koala to replace the bear, the Black Forest Bench Seat is a contemporary Australian take on the European style. Made from white beech, red cedar and Tasmanian blackwood the work incorporates numerous sculptural techniques including figurative carving, curved laminations, textured surfaces, burning/ebonising and natural coloured finishes.
