Beyond the Rubble has been crafted from Christchurch earthquake-salvaged rimu. The 2011 earthquakes caused devastating damage to Christchurch. Whole suburbs had to be abandoned with thousands of homes being demolished. It’s therefore a privilege to breathe new life into a valuable resource. Beyond the Rubble is designed to reflect Christchurch’s resilience and highlight the power of our land. The result is a refined sculptural form that celebrates resilience in the face of adversity. The carved vertical slats reflect the landscape's seismic shift during the quakes. These slats are screwed to a rimu frame; this robust modular system allows for any future repairs. The slats have a smooth, tactile finish that was oiled with Osmo Polyx-Oil, selected as a natural alternative to polyurethane.
