For my 2022 Timber Major Work, I constructed a bedside table using Tasmanian Oakwood and Tasmanian Blackwood, applying a beetle shellac as part of the finish. While coming up with an idea for the project, I was very much inspired by the work of Nick Pedulla, in particular his Chevron End Grain Dresser and bedside tables. After watching countless YouTube videos of his work, I aimed to design and construct an elegant bedside table displaying different forms of joinery and technical aspects. I used dovetail joints for the carcass and both drawers, mortise and tenon joints for the leg frame and domino joints to widen the carcass boards and join the leg frame together. I also created a veneered drawer front using the face grain of the Tasmanian Oak and contrasted this with the end grain of the Blackwood. To balance these contrasting colours and grain types, I decided to inlay a copper strip. I then used push to open drawer runners to achieve a simple and elegant finish. In the construction of my bedside table, I encountered a range of challenges that required thought and care to solve, with the operation of new tools and equipment and construction of jigs to assist in the completion of my project.
