Playing backgammon with my dad is a cherished memory. Although we still have the set I grew up playing on, I was inspired to create a new one that would stand proudly alongside it. When I discovered some magnificent Amboyna, Macassar Ebony, and Pomelle veneers, I knew they would make a beautiful backgammon box. For the shakers and counters, I was fortunate to find solid Pomelle, which perfectly complements the solid Macassar Ebony counters I sourced. I brought the maple down to size and mitred it for the side boards, finishing the home section with luxurious blue leather. The Amboyna veneer graces both the internal and external surfaces, enhanced by a striking Macassar Ebony half sunburst on both sides. Every element of this piece has been crafted with care: from hand-cutting each veneer segment for the markers and sunburst, to turning, cutting, and chamfering the solid woods to create the counters. The box itself features mitred corners with an elegant ebony inlay running around. A final touch of French wax polish brings out the grains and colours of the woods, showcasing the beauty of wood in this backgammon set.
