The Athos lamp, influenced by the industrial atmosphere of the iconic malthouse silos in Melbourne's Burnley, is a continued exploration of material impropriety, melding the visually ephemeral with the decorative. Made from American Black Walnut timber shavings, the by-product of hand-planed timber off-cuts, Athos' voluminous form breathes new life into an otherwise discarded waste material and looks at the robustness timber shavings can create. Athos presents a sculptural silhouette that expands and contracts with time, as is the nature of timber, shifting its contours and embodying the visual decay and beauty of the industrial overtones of the silos. Athos' layered, textural composition is enhanced further while illuminated, offering invitingly warm tones and an opaque diffusion of light, showcasing the natural grain and hues of the hand-planed timber shavings.
