ARBR’s design encourages viewers to see a common object—the chair—through a fresh perspective; inspiring a deeper appreciation for the handmade and intentional in our daily objects. To achieve this, I utilized several manual techniques, including hand-shaping processes, as well as organic and sculptural design elements. The chair’s form is unified by three moulded ( and then shaped) components that come together at a distinct, subtly detailed junction. This intentional space and the flowing nature of the components invites exploration and touch. Each molded component is crafted from five shop-sawn ash strips, which are glued in purpose-built forms to create matching pairs. These pieces are then assembled and shaped to give the impression of organic growth. The name ‘ARBR’ is a nod to the word ‘Arbor,’ a shelter or growth of vines, reflecting the piece's organic sensibilities. The joinery combines both traditional and contemporary methods, including epoxied threaded rods and mortise-and-tenon joints. Through incorporating sculptural elements, a tactile quality, and a sense of lightness, the design invites viewers to engage with it as a thoughtfully crafted design object.
