Owen Cooper, Ania's Desk (TABLES, CHAIRS, DESKS 2021 )
This executive desk was designed and created for my wife as she studies to become a lawyer. It is made entirely of Victorian Ash, which has been stained in walnut and finished using Danish oil. The carcase and doors were made using recycled timber and as such contain imperfections and character. The frame is supported by ball and claw cabriole legs and it features split-turnings, which were based on Doric columns. The raised-panel theme is consistent throughout, however variations in style is used in order to attract the audiences’ attention to new details each time the desk is viewed. Ania’s Desk has four equal compartments below and five drawers in the upper section. On one corner, the drawer front is a façade and a lever must be pressed to pop the side panel to reveal a hidden shelf. Each drawer features hand-cut dovetails and is supported by undermount soft-close runners. Antique brass hardware is used to create unity within the project, whilst still adding to the overall reproduction style. The desk’s top measures just over 800 x 1600 and the height of the unit is ergonomically suited to the user.
