American eagle created using the Intarsia technique. Intarsia is an early Italian art form of wood inlay. Each Intarsia artist has his own style as there are no rules on how to or not to do your art. Most Intarsia projects are a flat or level surface, I try to go to another level and create depth to my projects. All of my works are wall hangings of which my friends have taken advantage off and requested many items for themselves. To achieve my results I firstly draw a plan (having a wife that is an artist helps), then have the drawing enlarged to a workable size. then I proceed to select timbers of colours that I would like to use including the grain of the wood. No offcut is thrown out. This eagle is made up of the following timbers : Body and main wing feathers, Wedge Brown smaller wing feathers, Roasted Blackbutt Tail feathers and head, American white Ash Feet, Huon Pine Claws, Ebony The finish on this piece is Cabothane Matt, water based.
