The 'Aether Box' is inspired by traditional Japanese Sashimono techniques and the intriguing world of interactive furniture with hidden compartments. The design's elegance is embodied in its hidden joinery and intricate details, which allow the box to operate with precision. It features five carefully crafted drawer compartments, each requiring a specific sequence to unlock. To access the box's unique features, one begins by sliding the top, revealing 'Aether's secret'—a mechanism that harnesses air to control movement. This concept was inspired by a piece made by someone who holds a special place in my life. The box features a variety of different mechanisms that allow for the smooth locking and unlocking of the components, a result of careful planning and numerous prototypes. The construction uses a selection of timbers, including Zebrano, Wenge, and Huon Pine. The African timbers were inherited from a friend, and I had long wanted to use them for a special project. After testing different materials, I chose Huon Pine for the drawers because the weight and properties were well-suited to the design. The box was finished with a steel-brush and has a natural oil/wax coating, creating a pleasing texture for a piece designed to be frequently handled and appreciated.
