A Curved Embrace. A chest of drawers built using New Zealand grown Blackwood and Walnut. I’m chasing a piece of furniture that feels welcoming and organic, soft yet precise. It is unusual to see a chest of drawers curve in this frontal dimension but the effect is worth it, evoking both an original and inviting sentiment. The bone-like, earthy feel of the leg frame adds movement to an already dynamic piece. The leg frame is joined with mitred bridle joints and wedged mortise and tenon. The drawers are individually angled and curved to match the front profile of the carcase. They are punctuated with handcut, through dovetails. The handles use an end grain veneer technique to combine the beauty of end grain with the strength of long grain. The flow of these handles mimics the curves elsewhere in the piece. Each drawer features solid Blackwood drawer bottoms and the piece is finished in oil.
