Jake Prunster, 10 Seater Dining Table (Student Awards 2018)

This bespoke dining table was made from marri timber with a slab of granite inset into the centre of the top.The timber was sourced by the school and had to be machined as it was roughsawn and not the correct size. The top of the table was 1200mm wide and was 30mm thick and each board that made up the total width varied in width. The total length of the table top was 2100mm. The construction of the table top was done by using 20mm biscuit joins, about six per board. The top was glued together with an epoxy resin adhesive because this adhesive was available in the workshop and was waterproof. The legs of the table were constructed by using 10mm thick domino joins two for each upright. The shaping of the legs was created using a jig made from 6mm MDF. The feet were joined to the legs with two 5mm countersunk screws. The legs were joined to the table top using a cleat. The cleat was joined to the legs by two biscuit joins and five 4.5mm x 40mm screws and the cleat was joined to the top by five 5mm x 45mm screws, the screws into the top sat in holes that allowed timber movement to occur. All rails were joined to the inside of the legs using a 10mm dowel join and 90mm joint bolt. Year 12, Nagle Catholic College. Teacher: John Spiers
