With three acclaimed and highly original exhibitions for past Melbourne Design Weeks under his belt, Dale Hardiman and Tom Skeehan still feel there's a way to go with inclusivity: 'Over the last 6 years we've felt that we've ultimately created an exclusive space, where designers that may be introverts or aren't able to attend events to meet us have missed out on opportunities to present new work. This year we decided to change this by producing the most inclusive exhibition possible.'

Friends & Associates is the project name that Dale Hardiman has used to organise seven shows to date, including Welcome to Wasteland, Self Portrait and Life & Death. 'The purpose of F&A has been to organise exhibitions whereby we have no vested financial interest in the outcomes, meaning our contributors trust us wholeheartedly in their outcomes and we can support them out of personal interest.'

For Melbourne Design Week 2023, 1-Hour Exhibition will be a temporary, one-hour exhibition hosted in a vacant concrete warehouse in Fitzroy. Dale explains: '1-Hour Exhibition invites designers, architects, creatives and the general public to bring an object that can be sat on – think a piece of paper, closed laptop, pizza box, dining chair – to be exhibited in Friends & Associates’ shortest group exhibition to date. As part of the exhibition, all seats will be documented and if unavailable, seating will be provided. The only requirement of the exhibition is that you must stay for the complete 60 minutes.'

Previous contributors to Friends & Associates shows include over 100 of Australia’s leading creatives, including ACV Studio, Adam Goodrum, Christopher Boots, Damien Wright, Danielle Brustman, Elliat Rich, Fiona Lynch, Flack Studio, Guy Keulemans and Kyoko Hashimoto, Jon Goulder, Jordan Fleming, Makiko Ryujin, P.A.M. (Perks and Mini), Ross Gardam, Tom Fereday, and many more.
