Stolen: 'Old Man Rakali' sculpture torn from streetscape
Clancy Warner sculpts in wood and metal and is known through her powerful public commissions throughout Australia. But now her most recent one, Old Man Rakali, a bronze depiction of a gentle water rat, has been sheared off by its locating bolts and stolen.
Installed March 20 on the corner of Adam and River streets Hindmarsh, SA Old Man Rakali ‘is just a little native water rat, ambling along the river’, explained Clancy Warner. ‘He embodies the connections between nature and culture, people and place. He is respectful of his environment and the Kaurna Yerta that he’s on.’ The $50k sculpture weighs 70kg and has been removed from its redgum ‘raft’ by cutting through the steel and concrete it was fixed to.
‘We believe Rakali has been stolen for its limited bronze material value. The value of Rakali is to our community, and we are incredibly disappointed this has been removed,’ City of Charles Sturt General Manager, Asset Management Services Adrian Ralph said.
Any information concerning the theft may be reported to South Australia Police on 13 14 44
