Sometimes we are introduced to people through their work, and much can be learned about a maker by seeing their approach to the craft.
This was the case for Alastair Boell when he first saw the work of Bryan Poynton in 2011. Admiration for his work led Alastair to later say that Bryan was ‘the most talented artisan I have ever met’, and some years later that perception also to a great friendship. You can read Alastair’s tribute to Bryan here.

On 22 March, 2025 a timber sale at Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking will include wood from the estate of the late Bryan Poynton. Jacqueline Boell, MGFW manager explains: ‘On Bryan’s death bed, Alastair promised him that he would make sure his beloved timber went to people who would appreciate it. So we are having a sale, where all the proceeds will go to his widow, who is unfortunately elderly with dementia’.
The sale will also include timber salvaged from and around Melbourne. Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking is located at 14 Cottage St, Blackburn and the timber sale is open from 10am to 4pm. See www.mgfw.com.au for more information.
