Recycled & Rescued: A new category for Maker of the Year
This year, Maker of the Year, presented by Carbitool includes a new themed category.
In 2023 Maker of the Year Awards, presented by Carbitool will celebrate work created from recycled and reclaimed timber.
We live in a throw-away world where ‘fashion’ often dictates some designs and materials are no longer on-trend or desirable. Wood is the ultimate renewable and recyclable material – and fortunately for us it does grow on trees – however that can take decades and even centuries! Using salvaged or reclaimed timber underlines the inherent value of wood and the need to safeguard a precious resource.
"Recycled & Rescued" is a new Maker of the Year Awards category open to those who create from wood salvaged from buildings and other structures, or from the forest floor. Furniture, boxes, turnings and sculptures are all eligible, in any style (contemporary, traditional, rustic).
You may incorporate other materials or recyclables, so long as recycled/reclaimed wood is the main material your piece is made of. In some cases it may be possible to re-make an entire piece of furniture, or upcycle componentry into a new design.
Entry is open to makers all over the world.
Entry criterion
Entry descriptions must state the source of the timber used, and any relevant details of its former ‘life’ or usage. Tell us the story of your piece and the concept of your design.
Judging criterion
In addition to the general judging criteria, entries will be judged on how they relate to the theme. This category is open to entrants from around the world including Australia.
Awards
There are two awards: Winner AU$1250 cash, Runner-up AU$250
