Perspective is the title of an exhibition of work by this year’s graduates from Sturt School of Wood. It’s a title that works on many levels for a maker, visually and stylistically.
For nine people it’s undoubtedly the culmination of an intense year of study, and coming to grips with the hand and machine skills that allow their ideas to come to life. On a personal level it’s much more of course.
The exhibition catalogue sums it up: ‘Perspective is an exhibition where furniture goes beyond its everyday function, inviting you to experience design in unexpected ways. Over the past year, each of the nine graduates responded to the same project briefs, but the results are worlds apart. Where else can you see furniture from the perspectives of a bartender, lawyer, portfolio manager, cop, programmer, nature guide, printer, and graphic designers? Every piece on display has been meticulously crafted to offer something new – whether through its form, function, or deeper meaning.’
The makers whose work is featured are: Andrew Watt, Craig Lind, Dominic Billson, Jarrod Cook, Jon Reilly, Josh Donald, Ken Playford, Matt Tindale and Sharyn Moors.
The exhibition will showcase not only the furniture designed and made by the students during the year but also the range of skills, techniques and approaches to design taught during the year-long Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Manufacturing course.
The graduation and opening of Perspective takes place 16 November at 11am at Sturt Gallery, Mittagong, NSW. The exhibition will be open each Wednesday through to Sunday both weeks, concluding Sunday 1 December. Opening hours are 10am–4pm.
