I decided to construct a serving tray showcasing Tasmanian veneers as a project this year. The idea for the ‘Gary the snail’ design comes from one of my favourite TV shows, Sponge Bob Square Pants.

After designing full size templates, the tray was then constructed by cutting each individual piece of veneer for the design with a Stanley knife. Initially, I had some difficulty with accuracy, but this improved through practice. Once the board was complete, it was carefully sanded, solid timber edging was attached, and the project was finished with four coats of spray lacquer finish.
