Kiam James Fletcher, Year 11, Thornlie Senior High School, WA

Teacher: Bill Davies

'At the beginning of this year Kiam Fletcher came to me in Year 12 Wood and said he wanted to make a special piece of furniture for his mother.

After a lengthy discussion and a search on google he came up with the idea of making an old world hall stand as an entry statement in the hallway of his family home. After looking at many styles he decided on “Edwardian”.

Jarrah as one of our West Australian natives was the timber of choice as it had the rich darkness similar to mahogany that he was after. The major frame made up of styles and cross-pieces were made up of old 75–50 roof cladding joists. The base and "brollie" holders were made up of old 120–50 roof rafters as were the brollie holding rails and the front panel of the drawer.

The front cabinet door and cabinet sidewalls were made up of old tongue and groove paneling from our storage room external door. All of the above was deconstructed, de-nailed and in all cases re-machined. The mirror was rebated and fitted into the main frame with our own moulding. The splash back tiles were in fact cut down from an original 600mm-400mm mosaic tile and again rebated and fixed with our moulding.

As the photos show the glove drawer was authentically constructed with dovetail joints and the brass and porcelain fittings sourced from Early Settler’s Antiques.'
