Brisbane Guitar Making School hits a new note

Queensland’s first and premier guitar-making school is strumming a new tune in 2025 with the opening of its custom-designed workshop in south-east Brisbane.

The Brisbane Guitar Making School, established in 2015 and acquired by luthier Trent Palelei in 2023, has moved to its new premises in Rocklea, officially opening on Monday 10 February 2025.

The larger workshop accommodates growing enrolments with bespoke equipment and a layout designed to boost safety and efficiency. A new curriculum and library further enhance the learning experience.

“We want this to be a school in the true sense of the word”, says Trent. “It’s a place where you don’t just make something—you learn new skills and grow as a craftsperson.”

Safety has been a key focus, with the addition of a dedicated sanding station and upgraded dust extraction systems. The new layout improves efficiency, allowing students to spend more time learning and less time moving materials.

“I’m also excited about the library”, Trent adds. “Students can borrow from thousands of books and use equipment to continue learning and making at home.”

Sustainability was prioritised during the workshop fit-out, with 70 per cent of materials sourced from reclaimed industrial waste.

Trent says 2025 is shaping up to be a record-breaking year for the school. “Last year, we taught 92 students to craft instruments, including ukuleles, custom electric guitars, and steel-string acoustics. With more instructors trained, we’re ready for a full schedule of classes in the new workshop.”

Students come from diverse backgrounds—CEOs, engineers, teachers, and hobbyists—and their willingness to roll up their sleeves to help with the move is a testament to the community the school has built.
