"A Thread That Binds", designing for traditional techniques
Over 2022, Ben Grieve-Johnson and Jon Grant collaboratively designed a chair to be made with traditional techniques. A Thread That Binds presents a series of prototypes, accompanied by the artists’ reflections on the design processes and the nature of crafting furniture through collaboration and the connections they cultivate.
Rather than merely shedding light on a craft few people still know, they aim to show how the process of design can revolve around the needs of a craft itself and, by extension, meaningful human work. Part of this will be expressed by a demonstration of the process as Jon teaches the design to a student in the gallery.
