‘I’ve always felt that Bungendore Wood Works Gallery was the physical home of fine woodwork in Australia’, said Rolf Barfoed, 39, who is soon to take on the role of Artistic Director.

Founded in 1983 by US-born designer maker David Mac Laren, BWWG has established itself as the destination point in Australia, and also worldwide, for those who want to see and buy finely made furniture and wood art. It’s also become an esteemed point of recognition for the makers it represents. Currently the gallery represents 167 designer makers and wood artists, but building that representation is one of the goals on Rolf’s horizon.

Rolf Barfoed is a talented and award winning designer maker, and with a team of four runs a busy furniture making business in Fyshwick. ‘Most of our work is for custom and one-off pieces,’ said Rolf, who enjoys the challenge of translating ideas and drawings into high quality work that can be made ‘made to speed’ – i.e. within time frames that are commercially viable.

Initially he will spend a day a week at the gallery as he transitions into the role. ‘I’ll be driving for the future’, said Rolf, commenting on where the gallery will be heading under his watch. ‘We need more younger makers, and more new makers.’ One of the strengths of the gallery is the size and diversity of the range of work it offers. ‘I’ll be reaching out to makers, finding out about them, and looking at possibilities for future exhibitions,’ he said.

The use of unique, special timbers crafted to the highest level is what distinguishes the work presented at BWWG, explained Rolf. ‘Eclectic and expressive work that’s beautifully made is our big point of difference.’

‘David is looking to pass the baton on and continue with his own making, however his influence will continue – he really cares about the future of fine woodworking in Australia and maintaining the gallery’s 40 year legacy and vision.’

Mac Laren’s original mission statement for the gallery now hangs in Rolf’s workshop and reads: ‘Bungendore Wood Works Gallery. Where Woodworkers display their Works. Where diversity is encouraged and fine Craftsmanship is essential.’ It’s now a mantra that Rolf Barfoed has firmly in mind.

Australian Wood Review congratulates Rolf Barfoed on his new appointment and wishes him well in guiding the future of Bungendore Wood Works Gallery.
