Luke Turk, Multifunctional Storage Device (Student Awards 2017)

A beautiful smooth-surfaced practical piece of furniture which improves the aesthetics of the lounge room. Aim: solve the problem of clutter in our lounge room and improve the overall aesthetics of the room. I sketched many initial ideas which progressively became more developed and more complicated, unfortunately. I researched and compared existing products in furniture stores. I browsed the internet for further ideas. After my final design was decided, I built a scale model which exposed design issues which were then fixed. Features: push-to-open and soft-close large drawers, smaller drawer with closed-cell-foam padding and a 5-port USB charging station, two in-built bluetooth speakers, two power outlets, remote-controlled RGBW LED strip-lights. I sourced materials from Wonson’s timber and Bunnings Warehouse. I used: tablesaw, bandsaw, drill press, cordless drill, handheld sander, bench sander, thicknesser, hand plane, biscuit-joiner, clamps. The final product was coated in Danish oil.
