This piece was inspired by a summer night backpacking in the High Sierra with my children, when they first saw the Milky Way stretching across the sky. That moment of wonder guided the design and build of the Galaxy Box over the course of six months. The octagonal form is wrapped in a mountain silhouette of Maple, Mahogany, and Walnut. The lid features a spiral of Rosewood, inlaid with brass stars to suggest a constellation. Two interior brass stars serve as guides for perfect lid alignment. Inside, full-grain cowhide suede provides a soft lining, with figured Maple walls framing the space. The underside of the lid echoes the top with a spiral of English Sycamore. The Galaxy Box is designed as a vessel for keepsakes and memories, reflecting the limitless night sky that inspired it.
