Paulownia decking, western red cedar stringing and trim, marine plywood
2200mm l x 580mm w (approx)
Lachlan chose to make a stand up paddle board for his HSC major practical work. The project was developed from commercially available plans modified to suit Lachlan’s own requirements. Construction commenced with the manufacture of bending jigs for the curved outside rails. The paulowina was laminated to enable the sharp curved sections of the rails.
Marine plywood frames were constructed with holes drilled through them to reduce weight, but still maintain strength. The rails were glued together, and the curved shape of the deck and face sides were roughly completed.
The rails were routed using a rebate cutter, to accept the laminated panels of paulownia and red cedar, with were carefully trimmed to size and shape. Trim panels at the tail of the board were fitted. Considerable shaping and sanding of the board was undertaken prior to finishing. Lachlan has completed a demanding project that required perseverance and patience, and considerable time and effort.
