The soon-to-be-published June issue (#83) of Australian Wood Review contains a story by Andrew Potocnik about Create From a Crate 2014.

Create From Crate 2014 is a competition that promotes the value of wood that would otherwise go to landfill. Much of the 500,000 tonnes of timber waste that goes to landfill in Victoria every year is made up of pallets, crates and boxes.

CFC is organized by Waste Converters in partnership with the Victorian Woodworkers Association. Potential exhibitors were offered used shipping crates/pallet material to design and make a piece from. Exhibitions of the resulting pieces took place at the start of the year at Hatch Contemporary Arts Space in Melbourne and later at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.

The video shows some of the process undertaken by one of the entrants, Will Matthysen, whose Clock 174 won the main prize and also a People’s Choice Award.
