For my Industrial Technology Timber major work I designed and constructed an 8 x 4ft pool table. The pool table is mainly made out of a hardwood called merbau which gives it good strength and durability. The legs consist of nine laminated pieces of the merbau to create an overall thickness of approximately 200mm which was then tapered to give a slimmer look. My sub frame was constructed out of 90 x 45mm construction pine which was very cost effective. I used compressed fibrous cement as my tabletop. This was a much better alternative to slate as it was a lot cheaper yet has very similar properties. I used a Tasmanian oak inlay in the legs, drawer faces and top rails to contrast the dark hardwood and give nice aesthetics. I included two drawers in my side rail for storage of chalk, triangles and balls. I used a blue felt which gave a very nice contrast to the brown merbau. Overall the project cost approximately $2000. I could not be happier with the result of my project.
